This is the best Autopsy album. The sonic difference between the lo-fi horror of "Severed Survival" and the lingering monstrosity of “Mental Funeral” is clear. The band’s historical similarities with Death and Necrophagia have been minimised and the ever-present Black Sabbath influences have been foregrounded. The two records feel like the same rotten death metal band. The two years between these albums gave the band time to improve as musicians and to revolutionise their song-writing, The band were on Peaceville at the time, fitting into an embryonic death/doom niche with label-mates Paradise Lost. Still, "Mental Funeral" is much more warped and elliptical than anything the UK band released.
